　　Yankee Stadium - home to the New York Yankees for over eight decades, and host to thirty-three World Series - is about to be demolished. It's a mega job, with mega challenges. But the first task at hand is saving parts of the stadium. Everything from the seats…to the sod will be sold. When the memorabilia salvage is over, the teams get straight to work at clearing out the stadium of anything that's not part of structure. From kitchen equipment, to light bulbs, to the famous outfield facade …it's all got to go. Then, the final breakdown. With an army of mega machines, the demo teams must systematically rip and strip-out the first two-tiers of seating until the stadium's nothing but a skeleton….then pull it down. But they're working within feet of a subway system that won't stop running. There's no room for error, and the job starts now.

　　In the extreme Russian nNorth a team of engineers are ready to dismantle the a Typhoon-class submarine-the world's largest nuclear submarine, the Typhoon. Int its heyday, this monster sub was a terrifying weapon of war-it prowled the oceans of the world armed with 20 deadly nuclear missiles. Now that the Cold War is over, the Typhoon is ready for demolition. But dismantling a submarine with two nuclear reactors is a risky mission. It will take the team over a year to remove the radioactive nuclear fuel, move the submarine into the dry dock and cut its hull into pieces small enough for recycling.

　　The F-4 Phantom has flown in Air Force squadrons from the United States, Europe and Asia. Its speed, agility, and firepower make it one of the most accurate and lethal fighter jets in the world. It has seen action in almost every modern conflict, from Vietnam to the Iran-Iraq War and even the current war in Afghanistan. But even these winged warriors have a shelf life. Some old F-4 Phantoms are used as unmanned drones for target practice, others are decommissioned and broken down - their working parts tested and refurbished for use in other plans. The breakdown process itself takes two and a half months…and is fraught with danger as each plane comes fully loaded with a Vulcan cannon, ejection seats armed with live rockets, and twin turbojet engines. The specialized crew charged with breaking down these parts is well aware of the importance of their job: one wrong move in the breakdown process can damage a plane component. Or worse, injure or kill a technician or a pilot.

　　In the intense glare of the Texas sun, a team of demolition experts attempt to cut down and recycle the Navy's "first and finest fast attack oiler," the U.S.S. Savannah AOR-4. This tough tanker ran fuel between the ships of the fleet for over 20 years. But now, she's making her final voyage to ESCO Marine, a sprawling scrap yard in the Southern most tip of Texas. Here, she'll be stripped down, gutted out and recycled. But the "Savy Sue" comes with an awful lot of challenges for ESCO owner Richard Jaross and his team. Asbestos, PCBs, and a decade of neglect make this once proud tanker one big mess.

　　The Orange Bowl home to the Miami Dolphins for 21 seasons, and host of five Super Bowls is about to be demolished. Its a monster breakdown job…with a monster deadline: In just four months, a demolition team needs to clear over a quarter million feet of stadium to get ready for a new stadium. Not only is there a tight timetable, everything must be salvaged or recycled. But before the team can break down the stadium, theyll have to save parts of it. After a memorabilia company combs the bowl for collectibles and auctions off what they salvage its finally time for the demo team to get their hands on the bowl. 50,000 left over orange seats, nearly 100,000 square feet of turf, and eight ten-ton stadium light towers are recycled or resold, freeing the demo team to take down the stadium itself. Using a combo of wrecking balls and mega machines, theyll cut, pull, and pummel this historic structure until its a bowl full of rubble. The iconic Orange Bowl, is about to be history.

But nothing lasts forever, and that includes a couple of 180-ton locomotives. Their engine technology is inefficient - so they're headed for the scrap dealer where they'll be cut down and cannibalized. Any salvageable parts must come out intact for resale, while and leftover metals - like steel and copper - will be cut up, melted down, and ultimately reformed into new products. In this business, nothing goes to waste. Get an inside look at the unknown world of scrap, where locomotives go to die…and be reborn.

At National Railway Equipment Company2 they reuse, recycle and rebuild old locomotives into high-tech, energy efficient machines.3 Follow a breakdown crew as they tear apart a 50-year-old locomotive4 and then rebuild her from the frame up. Chains and cranes do the heavy lifting, as power tools crank, torches flare and fires blaze. In just eight weeks5, this loco will undergo a complete transformation and emerge again a lean, green pulling machine.6

To remove this blockade, the team gambles on a radical, dangerous plan that's never been tried before: Turning the energy of a perfect storm against the debris. But in Sweden, a country known for it's "green" initiatives, Volvo's goal is for 90% percent of the truck to be reused, or recycled. Piece-by-piece, a team of experts must remove everything from the 350 horsepower engine, to the 8-foot tall cab, so it can be recycled, and reborn, even bigger.

　　The Piacenza bridge, 40 miles south of Milan1. Since 19492 this steel and concrete bridge3 has connected the cities of Piacenza and Lodi4, spanning a remarkable 3,300 feet5 across the Po River6. But in 2009, a dangerous flood causes the Pos water level to rise more than 20 feet7. On April 30th, disaster strikes: The northern end of the bridge collapses, taking with it four vehicles8. The bridge has now become the latest challenge for a team of Italian deconstruction experts. With a radical plan9, state of the art machinery10, and a recycling mandate of 90%11, Despe Demolizioni Speciali will have just 90 days to break this bridge12 down to make room for a new one13. It wont be easy...Theyll be battling against raging fall and winter weather14. The river levels are rising15 and their work areas are becoming saturated16 with water. And, on top of it all, the bridge is unstable17, and Despe doesnt dare put crews on top of the structure18. To take down this bridge, theyll need to operate from land19...and water20. Its a race against time21, on a demolition job where every cut could lead to a disaster22...

　　Break It Down is tackling one of its most formidable projects ever, a building that was made to be virtually impenetrable … the Riverfront State Prison in Camden, New Jersey. There are concrete cell blocks, a library, a chapel, four guard towers, and razor wire - and it's all got to come crashing down. This sixteen-acre property sits on valuable riverfront real estate. So the prison is getting a death sentence, and the land is going to be cleared for new construction. But there are obstacles at almost every turn - from the deadly risk of asbestos to the swirling snows of a winter storm. If that's not a big enough challenge, the team is working hard to recycle as much material from the old prison as they can. It's got to be carefully cleared out and shipped off, with old copper and steel becoming new products through recycling.
